Lipedema surgery in Germany

Germany is the only country where a national body has ruled on this surgery. Its benefits regulator, the G-BA, commissioned the LIPLEG randomized trial, which at its 12-month primary endpoint found 68% of surgical patients achieving a reduction of at least two points in leg pain against 8% on conservative care, and voted on 17 July 2025, on interim trial results, to remove the stage-III restriction, and the change took effect on 9 October 2025. German coverage now applies at any stage but not to everyone: it requires a BMI of 35 or below, no weight gain in the preceding six months, and six months of documented conservative therapy. That decision governs German statutory insurance and does not bind a US insurer. How that trial is used in a US appeal.
