Why a lymphedema therapist matters for lipedema

Conservative care is where lipedema treatment starts for most people: compression garments, manual lymphatic drainage (MLD), movement, and skin care. A certified lymphedema therapist delivers it, fits the garments, and writes it all down. Every major payer policy requires a documented trial of conservative care before it will consider covering surgery, usually three consecutive months and sometimes six. No payer requires that a certified therapist be the one to deliver it. What they require is documented conservative measures your physician can attest to. A certified therapist is still the practical choice, because fitting compression correctly is a skill and the notes come out in the form a reviewer expects. What LANA certification means

LANA, the Lymphology Association of North America, runs the recognized North American certification for lymphedema therapists. The CLT-LANA credential requires at least 135 hours of training through an accredited school plus a proctored board exam, and holders recertify every six years. Every therapist on these pages appears in LANA's public registry with a certification number and certification dates; the year each therapist first certified is shown on the state pages. Most are physical or occupational therapists by license, and some are massage therapists or nurses with the same lymphedema credential.

LANA certifies lymphedema therapy, and lipedema experience differs from one therapist to the next. MLD and compression are standard conservative care for both conditions, so a certified therapist is the right starting point; raise lipedema experience on the first call.
